Signet rings

Signet rings

The signet ring has been worn in Britain for centuries, originally to press a family crest into wax. Today most people have them engraved with initials. We stock gold signet rings in several shapes, including oval and heart-shaped faces and small baby signets that are often given as christening gifts, and we can engrave them for you.

Gipsy rings

Gipsy rings

In a gipsy ring the stones are set into the band itself, so they sit flush with the gold rather than rising above it. There are no claws to catch on clothing and the stones are well protected, which is why gipsy rings have long been a favourite for men and for anyone who works with their hands.

Claddagh rings

Claddagh rings

The Claddagh comes from Ireland and shows two hands holding a crowned heart: the hands for friendship, the heart for love and the crown for loyalty. Tradition says that worn on the right hand with the heart facing outwards, it means the wearer is single. Turned inwards, the heart is taken.

Celtic, knot and buckle rings

Celtic, knot and buckle rings

Celtic patterns and knot rings suggest a bond that can't be broken, which makes them a popular gift between partners and friends. Buckle rings became fashionable in Victorian Britain and are still worn as a sign of loyalty. We also stock two-colour rings in yellow and white gold for a more modern look.

Family rings and baby rings

Family rings and baby rings

Mum and sister rings, with ID-style sides and small stones, are a thoughtful way to mark a new baby or a milestone birthday. Baby rings are made in very small sizes as christening and naming-day gifts. Many families later hang them on a fine chain to keep them safe.

Stone-set and dress rings

Stone-set and dress rings

If you are looking for gold rings for women with a little more sparkle, choose from cluster rings, three-stone rings and single-stone dress rings set with cubic zirconia, garnet or onyx. For real diamonds, see our diamond rings and lab-grown diamond collections.

Men's Gold Rings

Men's rings are usually heavier and wider, with flat or domed tops. Our men's gold rings include gipsy rings, three-stone and square-top rings, knot rings, buckle rings and horseshoe rings. A heavier ring holds its shape better over years of daily wear, so weight is worth paying for if you plan to wear it every day.

9ct or 18ct: Which Is Better for a Ring?

Rings take more knocks than any other piece of jewellery, so the choice matters more here than it does for earrings or pendants.

  • 9ct gold rings are harder and more resistant to scratches and dents, and they cost less. They are a sensible choice for everyday rings and signets.
  • 18ct gold rings have a richer, deeper colour and suit engagement rings and special pieces. The metal is softer, so it shows wear a little sooner.

If you wear two rings together, such as an engagement ring and a wedding band, choose the same carat and colour for both. A harder metal slowly wears away a softer one where they rub. For a fuller comparison of carats, colours and hallmarks, see our guide to gold jewellery.

How to Find Your Ring Size

UK ring sizes run from A to Z, with half sizes in between. A few tips will help you get it right first time:

  • Measure at the end of the day, when your fingers are at their largest, and when your hands are warm.
  • If your knuckle is much wider than the base of your finger, the ring needs to pass over the knuckle, so size for that.
  • Wide bands fit more snugly than thin ones, so for a chunky band most people need to go up half a size.
  • If you are buying a surprise gift, borrow a ring the person wears on the same finger and bring it in. We can measure it for you.

Most gold rings can be resized in our workshop if you get it slightly wrong, although rings with stones all the way round are harder to adjust. Read more about ring resizing and repairs.

Cubic Zirconia or Diamond?

Many of our dress rings are set with cubic zirconia, often shortened to CZ. It is a lab-made stone that looks very like a diamond, but it is not one. CZ gives you plenty of sparkle for a much lower price, which makes it a good choice for fashion rings and gifts. It is softer than diamond, so after years of wear it can pick up fine scratches and lose some of its shine. If that happens, a CZ can be replaced cheaply.

If you want a stone that will look the same in 50 years, choose a natural or lab-grown diamond.

Looking After Your Gold Ring

Take rings off for the gym, gardening and heavy cleaning, and before swimming in chlorinated pools.

Clean gold rings in warm water with a drop of washing-up liquid and a soft toothbrush, then dry with a lint-free cloth.

Have stone-set rings checked once a year. Worn claws are easy and cheap to fix before a stone falls out.
