A Guide to Gold Chain Styles

The name of a chain describes how its links are shaped and joined. That affects how it looks, how it moves and how strong it is.

TraceEven oval links, finer than a belcherDelicate pendants and layering

Weight, Thickness and Hollow Chains

When comparing gold chains, look at the weight in grams, not just the width. Two chains can look the same size in a photo, yet one can contain twice as much gold. We show an approximate average weight for each length on every product page.

Some styles come in hollow versions, such as hollow curb, hollow belcher and hollow Singapore chains. A hollow chain is made from gold tubes rather than solid wire, so it looks chunkier for the same money. The trade-off is that it dents and kinks more easily, and it can be harder to repair neatly. For a chain you plan to wear every day, or a heavy pendant, a solid chain is the better long-term buy.

Gold Chain Prices in the UK

The price of a gold chain comes down to four things:

  • Weight: the amount of gold is the biggest part of the cost.
  • Carat: 18ct contains twice as much pure gold as 9ct, so a chain of the same weight costs more.
  • Construction: woven styles such as byzantine and Prince of Wales take more work to make than a simple trace or belcher.
  • Length: a longer chain uses more gold, so the price goes up with each inch.

If you want an affordable gold chain, a 9ct trace or belcher gives you solid gold for the lowest outlay. Our lightest 9ct chains start at around £100, while heavy solid curb and byzantine chains can cost thousands of pounds. Because the price of gold moves every day, the best way to compare chains fairly is by carat and weight.

Men's Gold Chains

Men usually choose a curb, figaro, Prince of Wales, byzantine or Miami link chain, worn at 20 to 24 inches. For a chain worn alone, a width of around 4mm or more gives a clear, confident look. For carrying a pendant, such as a cross or a St Christopher, a solid curb or belcher is the most dependable choice. If you are buying a heavy chain, come in to see it first. Weight feels very different on the neck than it looks on screen.

Choosing a Chain for a Pendant

  • Make sure the clasp and the end rings of the chain pass through the loop on the pendant, called the bail.
  • Match the weight of the chain to the pendant. A heavy pendant on a very fine chain will pull it out of shape and can snap it.
  • Trace, belcher and rolo chains are the easiest to pair with pendants, because the pendant slides freely and sits in the centre.
  • Buy the chain in the same carat and colour as the pendant so both wear and age at the same rate.

Browse our gold pendants and gold initial pendants to find one to add to your chain, or see our gold necklaces for finished designs.

Looking After a Gold Chain

  • Undo the clasp to take a chain off, rather than pulling it over your head. It saves the clasp and the links.
  • Store chains separately, hanging or laid flat, so they don't knot.
  • Take your chain off before swimming, as chlorine can weaken gold over time.
  • If a chain snaps, keep every piece and bring it in. Most broken chains can be soldered and given a new clasp in our jewellery repair workshop, and we can also shorten a chain that is too long.
