Pure gold is too soft for most jewellery, so it is mixed with other metals to make it stronger. The carat tells you how much of the metal is pure gold. Our ready-to-wear range is made in 9ct and 18ct, the two most popular choices in the UK.
| Carat | Pure gold content | Hallmark number | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9ct | 37.5% | 375 | Harder-wearing and the most affordable way to buy solid gold |
| 14ct | 58.5% | 585 | A middle ground between 9ct and 18ct |
| 18ct | 75% | 750 | Richer colour, often chosen for engagement rings and fine jewellery |
| 22ct | 91.6% | 916 | Very rich colour, but soft, so it is less suited to rings set with stones |
| 24ct | 99.9% | 999 | Almost pure gold, too soft for most everyday jewellery |
Yellow gold is the traditional choice and suits almost every style. White gold is gold mixed with white metals and is usually plated with rhodium for a bright finish. The plating wears over time, so white gold jewellery benefits from re-plating now and then.
Rose gold gets its pink colour from copper, which also makes it fairly hard-wearing.
A simple rule if you are buying a gift: look at the jewellery the person already wears most and match the colour.

In the UK, any item sold as gold that weighs more than 1 gram must be hallmarked by one of the four independent assay offices, in London, Birmingham, Sheffield or Edinburgh. A hallmark is your guarantee that the gold is what the seller says it is. It is made up of:
You may also see optional marks, such as a date letter showing the year of hallmarking, or a crown, which is the traditional symbol for gold. It is worth checking for a hallmark on any gold you buy, online or in person.

Buying gold jewellery online should feel as safe as buying it over the counter, wherever you are in the UK. When you order from us:
Weights shown on our gold jewellery are approximate averages, because each piece varies very slightly. For your security, we can only deliver to the billing address of the card used to pay.
Not sure which chain length to choose? A 16-inch chain sits close to the base of the neck. An 18-inch chain falls around the collarbone and is the most common length for a pendant. A 20-inch chain sits just below the collarbone, and 22 to 24 inches falls to the upper chest, a length many men prefer.
Some of our chains are hollow. Hollow gold is still solid gold, but with a hollow centre, which makes it lighter and more affordable. The trade-off is that it dents more easily than a solid piece, so it is best for items that don't take heavy knocks.

If you can't find exactly what you want, we can make it. Our workshop makes bespoke gold jewellery to order, from engraved signet rings and name pendants to a chain in a particular length or a matching set of bangles. We can also turn old or broken gold into a new piece through our jewellery redesign service. Find out more about our bespoke jewellery or call us on 020 7381 3411.
It is hard to judge the weight and colour of gold on a screen. Our shop is at 393 North End Road, Fulham, SW6 1NR, open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5:30pm and Saturday from 9am to 6pm. Come in to see how a chain hangs, compare 9ct and 18ct side by side, or have a ring resized or a pendant engraved in our workshop.
