Charm necklaces

Charm necklaces

A small charm on a fine rolo chain is the most wearable gold necklace there is. Our charm necklaces include stars, hearts, circles, four-leaf clovers and angel wings, and several have adjustable chains so you can wear them close to the neck or a little lower. They make easy gifts for birthdays, graduations and bridesmaids.

Solitaire diamond necklaces

Solitaire diamond necklaces

A single diamond on a fine chain goes with everything, from jeans to evening wear. Our solitaire necklaces are set with lab-grown diamonds in 9ct white gold. They are real diamonds with the same sparkle as mined stones, at a lower price. You can compare sizes in our lab-grown diamond range.

Collarettes

Collarettes

A collarette is a flat, flexible necklace that lies against the collarbone like a collar. Styles such as the panther link and the Greek key pattern have a strong, classic look and suit open necklines. Because they are heavier than a chain, collarettes hold their shape and don't twist while you wear them.

Station and cross necklaces

Station and cross necklaces

A "by the yard" necklace has small stones spaced evenly along a fine chain, so the sparkle sits all the way round the neck rather than in one place. We also stock gold cross necklaces and pieces with fixed motifs, such as interlocking rings.

Initial necklaces

A single letter on a gold chain is one of the most popular personal gifts. See our full range of gold initial pendants, which can be paired with any of our chains.

Necklace, Chain or Pendant: What's the Difference?

The words overlap, so here is how we sort our collections to help you find what you want:

  • Gold necklaces (this page) are finished pieces, where the chain and the design are made to go together, such as a charm necklace, a collarette or a solitaire.
  • Gold chains are plain chains in styles such as belcher, curb and figaro. You can wear them alone or add a pendant.
  • Gold pendants are the hanging piece on its own, to add to a chain you already own or buy separately.
  • Buy the chain in the same carat and colour as the pendant so both wear and age at the same rate.

How to Choose the Right Length

Where a necklace sits changes how it looks with your clothes. As a guide:

LengthWhere it sitsWorks well with
14 to 16 inchesClose to the base of the neckOpen collars, strapless and scoop necklines
18 inchesOn or just below the collarboneAlmost everything; the classic length for a charm or pendant
20 to 22 inchesJust below the collarbone to the top of the chestCrew necks and high necklines
24 inches and longerMid-chestLayering over knitwear and shirts

How to Layer Gold Necklaces

Layered necklaces look deliberate when each one has its own space. Leave about 2 inches between lengths, for example 16, 18 and 20 inches. Mix weights and textures, such as a fine charm necklace with a slightly heavier chain, so they don't all blur into one. Necklaces in different styles also tangle less than identical chains. Stick to one gold colour, or mix yellow and white on purpose so it looks like a choice rather than an accident.

    Gold Necklaces as Gifts

A gold necklace is often someone's first piece of real jewellery, which is why they are so often given for 18th and 21st birthdays, graduations and weddings. If you don't know what length to buy, an adjustable charm necklace is the safest choice. If you are buying for someone who already wears a lot of jewellery, look at the colour of gold they wear most and match it. Every order includes free UK delivery by Royal Mail Special Delivery and 14 days for returns.

    Caring for Your Gold Necklace

    • Put your necklace on after perfume, hairspray and body lotion, not before.
    • Fasten the clasp before storing it, and keep each necklace separate so chains don't knot together.
    • Take it off before swimming, as chlorine can weaken gold over time.
    • If a clasp starts to feel loose or a link looks stretched, bring it in. Chain repairs are quick in our jewellery repair workshop.
